The Ultimate Guide to Color Matching Your Hair Extensions

Getting amazing hair extensions really involves hitting all the cylinders of getting the best products, in the right color and length, and having them installed by a stylist that is both an artist and technician.

I can say that one of the most frustrating parts of selling hair extensions online is that we aren’t able to color match the amazing range of hair colors in person. There is something about being in natural light and holding the extensions directly up to your hair that makes it  precise.

Online… not so much. Our hair extension color charts… uh, not the greatest. A color ring is better, but not made from the exact hair you will be purchasing.  So we’ve been working behind the scenes here at to bring the experience we provide IRL online.

This Ultimate Guide to Color Matching your hair extensions will share 4 ways to color match your hair extensions online AND introduce our new FREE color matching service to both stylists and clients!

BUT First… a few tips on color matching and buying hair extensions online in general.

TIP 1: Match your hair extensions to your ends of the hair vs. your roots. The ends of your hair will sit on top the extensions and they need to blend more towards the ends than the roots.

TIP 2: Be prepared to customize the color or tone. For most women, we got you! The color of your hair will be easy to match. But you know who you are… trend is your middle name or you really love having very multi-dimensional hair that is bayalage, sombre, smudged, or ombre. So for you… be prepared that you might need to deposit some color to your roots. Also, if you like your hair to be very platinum or cool and ashy, you might need to tone your hair even further than what the hair arrives as.

TIP 3: Blondes… opt for two-tone colors or rooted colors. Rooted colors are my jam! I love them because they are perfect for when your hair starts growing and your hair extensions are further down. This is especially true for blonde tape-in hair extensions! You don’t want that line to reveal that your flawless hair is indeed extensions! So how do you know if something is rooted? The color name usually begins with an R. If you don’t like rooted hair extensions, then opt for two-tone blondes. These blondes typically have a lowlight color and a highlight color. This way, if your client isn’t an exact match to one color, their hair color can act as a bridge color. Additionally, most blondes have 3-4 colors of blonde in their hair so having more dimension makes your hair extensions look way more realistic.

Option One: Use our Online Bohyme Color Guide

We have a great page that shows all of the colors we offer on the Bohyme Color Guide Page and it actually shows the entire weft of hair vs. the small swatch on the color chart. This is helpful especially when it comes to Ombre and Bayalage colors.

Pros: It’s fast and easy! By using this guide, you can see it and you don’t have to wait for a response or a color ring to arrive in the mail.

Cons: The screen leaves a lot to be desired. The resolution and quality of your computer can alter the color and honestly, there’s just no way to tell until the hair arrives.

Option Two: Color Ring Loan Program

We have a great color ring loan program. On the color ring page on our website, if you select "Rent," we include a prepaid return envelope in your package which allows you to use the color ring, match your or your client’s hair, and then return the ring and get a full refund.

Pros:  It's a free way to get an idea of the range of colors and it usually arrives in 3 days with free shipping!

Cons: Color Rings are made from synthetic hair, which doesn’t reflect light like human hair, so the actual color can be off from the color ring swatch.

Also, color rings don’t show what lengths are made in certain colors and lengths so you might find a color that just isn’t made in any product that would work for you.

Lacking personal expertise

Option Three: Messenger or Live Chat a Photo of your Hair to one of our Agents

Our Customer Experience Manager is available to answer questions and it’s a great way to get immediate information. You can use our Messenger feature or the live online chat to send us a photo. You can also tag us in one of your photos on Instagram if you have a public profile and @us in the comments for help color matching or DM us a photo

Tips to a great color matching photo:
  • Take a photo of your self with the sun behind your camera.
  • Be in natural sunlight if you can.
  • Take your hair out of a ponytail, bun, or braid and show us the ends as much as possible.

Pros: Instant answer and we can follow up with the necessary questions to get you what you need.

Cons:Only available when we are online M-F

Option Four: Use our Color Concierge Form

We are excited to offer this as a complimentary service! It’s a simple form you fill out with the name of the brands you are considering, the length you need, and a photo of you now, as well as an optional color of the hair color you are trying to achieve and we can send you a thorough color suggestion within 1 business day.

Pros: More in-depth process where we ask our team of managers, stylists, and staff with expert experience to suggest 2 or 3 great color possibilities.
